Near-Western in style, we launch FMFF18 with director Lance Daly’s unflinching Irish famine drama, starring such screen luminaries as Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent & Stephen Rea, this is a tense revenge thriller, full of both brutality and bleak beauty.
Hardened & bloodied Irish Ranger Feeney ( Animal Kingdom’s James Frencheville), a former British soldier, returns from fighting for the British Army in 1847 to discover an Ireland, his beloved homeland, swamped & ravaged by utter catastrophe. Those family members that survived starvation have been annihilated by a cruel new ascendency, eager to secure exclusive, apparently uncomplicated control of the land.
Director Daly draws directly from the stylised cinematic lexicon of the American Westerns, to bravely present a dark, powerful drama about an era of colonialism in Ireland seldom cinematically portrayed before now.
