Max Cady is a seriously unpleasant individual. Resurrected fairly effectively by De Niro in Scorsese’s 1991 remake, what we have here, however, is the original article; Robert Mitchum – at the very height of his powers – delivering a master-turn, as the psycho’s psycho, in this truly classic 1962 neo-noir thriller, that even today commands 100% on famed film forum Rotten Tomatoes.
Initially storyboarded by Hitchcock before he dropped out over pay disputes, newcomer (at the time) J Lee Thompson was appointed, and absolutely hit the nail on the head, with this pitch-perfect nail-biter, that also features a steely-jawed Gregory Peck as the unfortunate lawyer Sam Bowden, who Cady decides to revisit; terrorize, following his release from jail.
Still as shocking and aggressive as it felt when released over 55 years ago, it remains a cornerstone of American Cinema, and Mitchum’s performance is one that still commands complete respect; terror from audiences today, much as it did back then. Vital
