Think equal measures of Ghost Hunters, Father Ted & What We Do In The Shadows. Blend. Sound good? You’d better believe it. Closing our 2019 Full Moon Film Festival is this peach of an Irish comedy which views rural Irish life through a surreal comic lens.
Lonely driving instructor Rose Dooley – hilariously played by an understated Maeve Higgins), believing herself to be responsible for the death of her paranormal investigator father, decides to turn her back on her ability to communicate with the dead. However, she finds herself strangely inclined to help attractive widower Martin (Barry Ward), whose wife hasn’t allowed death to make her any less domineering over her beleaguered husband.
Matters become urgent when local one-hit wonder Christian Winter (Will Forte) believes Martin’s daughter will make the perfect sacrifice to a demon, who will in turn revive his flagging musical career. Very warm, parochial & incredibly funny in that particular “Ted”-style, and with a sharp eye for comic detail that just enhances the whole film, directors Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman have crafted a real jewel in Extra Ordinary – laughs aplenty, and the ideal conclusion to Full Moon 2019.
