In this edgy but surprisingly compassionate comedy-drama, Zak (Zack Gottsagen) is a young man with Down Syndrome, who busts out from a residential nursing home to follow his dream of attending the professional wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck (the brilliant Thomas Haden Church).
An unusual turn of events pairs him on this road trip with Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a small-time outlaw on the run, who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach & ally. Together they wind through deltas, elude capture, drink whisky, find God, catch fish, not to mention convincing Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), a kind nursing home employee charged with Zak’s return, to actually join them on their crazy, misguided journey.
This film - a critical success - feels as gloriously unplanned & spontaneous as the adventure it depicts; the contrasting performances from a frankly incredible Gottsagen & a nuanced, layered LaBouef, gives PBF an almost dangerous feel – in a good way. A feelgood gem, visually delightful & boosted by consistently outstanding performances throughout – Peanut Butter Falcon is like an old fashioned, Mark Twain-style odyssey picture, and is certainly no worse for that.
