Sleazy, smoky, atmospheric & throwing an unwanted spotlight on the scandalous underside of the 50’s New York publicity machine; director Alexander Mackendrick’s scathing satire was utterly reviled by the industry upon release, undoubtedly because it was so perilously close to the real, crooked truth about the fame game.
The fact that two huge stars in the ascendancy, in Burt Lancaster & Tony Curtis, joined the project (and were seldom better since), also meant huge issues for their careers, as everyone involved in the project was sidelined & ignored for being part of something so scabrous - & realistic. Over 60 years later, the tight direction, polished performances & stunning script, have rightly earned Sweet Smell the recognition it richly deserves, and was refused upon release - that of an absolute film milestone, one of the very, very best. As Lancaster’s megalomaniac columnist Hunsecker mutters about NYC, “I love this dirty town”. By the end, you will too.
