This new fashion for so-called “Live Action” remakes, really is giving Disney a new lease of life, as they revisit their “Greatest Hits”, such as The Lion King, and utilising the newest technologies available, to present new versions of family favourites.
Surprisingly directed by none other than the original geezah Guy Ritchie, this new remix of Aladdin comes to screen then, with incredibly impressive results, not least from the incomparable Will Smith whom steps into the seemingly unfillable curly shoes of the much-missed Robin Williams. So, does it work? Well, the well-loved plot is turned out fairly faithfully, with all the characters so beloved of the original animation also returning to this new version. So Jasmine, Abu, Jafar et al all populate a stunningly realised all-new Agrabah, and all things considered Ritchie’s version is a shining, shimmering update, faithful to, if not as innovative as, the beloved original.
And how does Will Smith fair? Brilliantly, it transpires – a new burst of attitude, flavour and humour that represents the Genie perfectly. All in all a successful project that a whole new swathe of Disney fans will adore, and whilst it divided critics, the Box Office told a different story. A delight.
