Bart Layton’s visceral, slick crime thriller, is based on the true story of a library heist that took place at Transylvania University in Kentucky 2004,and has had both audiences & critics alike fully shaken up, since its triumphant debut at Sundance in January ’18.
With a bumping hip hop soundtrack, and funky, Tarantino-esque dialogue, AA is quite unlike any other “heist”-style movie you may have seen – a peculiar blend of Ferris Bueller meets the Oceans films via, erm, The Social Network. It chronicles four bright, ordinary college students, who plot to steal some rare books from their university's Special Collections Library, in a misguided quest for personal glory. Based on the true story, the film’s ace card is that it cleverly includes actual interview footage with the real life foursome, who crazily attempted the bizarre heist. So original is this never-before-seen concept, that we get the ultimate “director’s commentary” essentially, on the action we are watching – and it works. Really well.
Thrilling, sharp, beguiling and ultimately very deep – this is a relatively conventional thriller - albeit a very good one - but with an astounding, startling & thoughtful documentary at its heart. Smart cinema from director Layton – highly recommended.
