You know the rules by now, surely….no direct sunlight, no food after midnight, and DEFFO don’t get them wet. Joe Dante’s 1984 horror comedy, exec produced by Spielberg, has aged pretty darn well all things considered – a giddy, knowing, sly & funny romp, that brilliantly skewers & satirises the saccharine seasonal world of Frank Capra’s uber-Christmas classic, It’s A Wonderful Life.

For those that don’t know, this is the story of one man’s gift of a cute, cuddly pet, that unfortunately transforms into something much more, um, troublesome. Starring the unknown Zach Galligan, it was a box office smash despite the couple of (now tame looking) slightly more violent scenes, and spawned a glut of merchandise for the next few years, up to 1990’s sequel “The New Breed”.

A colourful, crazed cult favourite from the 80’s, and a bonafide Christmas classic, and the first American PG-13 cert. Pop fact – Mogwai means “devil” in Cantonese. Who knew?
