Big screen biopics have become significantly more fashionable (and profitable) in the last 2 or 3 years, but, once it was confirmed she had been cast, Renée Zellweger’s performance as Judy Garland was a VERY hotly anticipated ticket amongst the torrent of other biographical movies on offer. Based on the West End and Broadway smash “End Of The Rainbow”, director Rupert Goold's film very precisely follows Garland's career during the last year of her life, when she relocated her stage career to Britain.
After enjoying some initial success for a run of sell-out concerts she performed in London, her efforts eventually stop making progress and even start to falter, as her health issues worsen. Inevitably there were doubters and those who arched their eyebrows upon Zellweger’s casting, but all those words had to be swallowed, as this is a universally acclaimed, utterly assured performance that it seems she has been waiting on for some time. She inhabits Garland entirely, and critics everywhere have raved about this happy, sad, joyous, melancholy, captivating film, completely dominated by it’s peerless central performance.
