There hasn’t been a more divisive Best Picture winner since 2004’s “Crash”, but there’s no denying “GREEN BOOK”’s credentials; a film that, despite its touchy subject matter, delivers humility, humanity and humour in spades – and the Academy always love the phrase “Based on a true story”.
Director Peter Farrelly’s road picture was hugely blessed to have two such magnetic, believable central performances at its heart, in its depiction of the 1962 true life tour of the Deep South, undertaken by classical/jazz pianist Don Shirley, and his bodyguard & driver, Italian-American Tony Vallelonga. Mahershala Ali, who picked up Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Shirley, gives a subtle, nuanced, take on the late great jazzman, and is exquisitely partnered onscreen by a Oscar-nominated performance from Viggo Mortensen, in this heart-warming tale of burgeoning friendship and respect between two people, in highly tense & awkward situations.
It has picked up awards and plaudits in abundance since its premiere at Toronto in September 2018, including a nomination for the Cinema For Peace most valuable film of 2019. Come and see for yourselves, on the Big Screen, the way it should be seen.
