The first animated entry into the Spiderman franchise is also the first non-Disney/Pixar feature to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar since 2011’s “Rango”. The funny, fresh, “SPIDERMAN; INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE” is a clever, very human animated feature, that appeals to hardcore fans, superhero lovers & hardened critics alike; an incredible project that took 140 animators the thick end of 3 years to create.
It is a sprawling endeavour, there is no doubt, but what directors Bob Pershietti, Peter Ramsey & Rodney Rothman have achieved here is something really rather special – a comicbook-feel, standalone superhero feature that is all at once an emotionally moving, cutting-edge, progressive, diverse, funny, action-packed, silly, & ultimately visually stunning masterpiece. In a post-Deadpool cinematic world now, the filmmakers have smartly realised that the only practical way to breathe believable life into what is actually an ancient superhero, is to cleverly acknowledge the pop culture profile, the self-awareness & the iconography of that hero, and to play on it, and skewer it, to make it fresh for new audiences. SPIDER-VERSE is almost perfect in this respect; smart and shrewd, with a story full of heart about one particular Spider-Man, Miles Morales ( voiced by Shameik Moore), who becomes one of many Spider-Men who team up to save New York from the grip of the evil Kingpin.
Unquestionably a worthy Academy Award recipient, SPIDER-VERSE alters the template for what this type of movie needs to, and can, be. Unmissable, and vital to see on the Big Screen.
