Refreshingly unorthodox, full of heart, and creating serious Oscar buzz, this movie was a cert for our final NCC-Select of 2017. “THE FLORIDA PROJECT” is an incredibly poignant and warm look at childhood, set on the  dusty highway peripheries of the magical paradise of Disney World ,  and it tells the story of 6 year old Moonee and her mother Halley, who live their everyday lives at the ironically named Magic Castle budget motel, managed by  the charismatic Bobby (unforgettably played by the ever-dependable Willem Dafoe – Best Actor alert?). Their humdrum, hand-to-mouth existence, punctuated by sacrifice and ongoing hardships, is here overshadowed by the incredible, mischievous and imaginative adventures borne of the mind of Moonee (Brooklynn Prince – again, serious gongworthy performance);  this is a character-driven, sun-kissed piece of beautiful and evocative cinema, similar in feel to Little Miss Sunshine and Beasts Of The Southern Wild; set over one long summer, director Sean Baker has created a mini-masterpiece here, that warms the cockles long after the credits roll. We’ll say it – a hands down must-see, not to mention a shoe-in
