Imagine the world without The Beatles?! It’s easy if you try. With the dream combination of Richard Curtis writing, Danny Boyle directing, & Fab Four music throughout, YESTERDAY already has major calibre from the outset, as a romantic comedy with real heart plus really good tunes. The likeable Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, a struggling musician who, following an accident, discovers he is the only person in the world to remember The Beatles, whereupon he comes up with the wheeze of appropriating their back catalogue for himself, and becoming famous from presenting their music as his own.
Deftly steered by Boyle, Yesterday plays out as a sweetly charming moralistic fantasy, based around an intriguing notion, and it bounces along enthusiastically buoyed by the evident chemistry between Patel and Lily James, as Jacks childhood friend & love interest. It cost the filmmakers $10m for the rights to use the Beatles music, but there’s no doubting that Yesterday enjoyed a great box office run, and , while it isn’t the most cerebrally challenging of films, it will definitely warm the cockles on a December evening, plus have you singing along to all your favourite Beatles numbers. All this, AND an Ed Sheeran cameo too!
