Brave

Directed by Brenda Chapman,

Oh, how we love Merida of DunBroch. Written & directed by Brenda Chapman, Brave unbelievably marks Pixar’s first ever film with a female protagonist - and this is in 2012.

Engagingly voiced by Kelly McDonald, the story follows the fallout caused by our Merida, upon her refusal to follow tradition in becoming married to some lily-livered gent. There follows some brilliant setpieces as her mother falls ill to a vile curse, & Merida is called upon to save the kingdom. Breathtakingly animated (3 tartans were specially created for the film!), Brave is a rousing & funny fantasy, despite treading more familiar “Disney princess”-style territory. And Merida is still one of the absolute queens.
