Wind, Tide & Oar

A beautifully crafted documentary following traditional boatbuilder Ben Harris as he sets sail without engine or electronics — just wind, tide, and oar.

Part homage, part meditation, this gentle voyage is for anyone drawn to the sea, craftsmanship, or soulful storytelling.

Before the screening, we are delighted to welcome John Riley, Commodore of Newcastle Yacht Club, who will introduce the film with a short talk.

John has been sailing since he was ten years old; his favourite pastime is being on the water, preferably under sail.  He owns three small boats; if he is not afloat he is probably thinking about his next opportunity to get afloat.

John will introduce the film Wind, Tide and Oar, which beautifully illustrates a growing leisure interest in using natural forces to move on the water.

He'll talk about our deep shared maritime heritage, how sail power eventually gave way to engine power, and the resurgence of interest in sail and oar today as a leisure pursuit.

Finally if you are inspired by the film, John will invite you to try sailing for yourself at Newcastle.
