CLUB
Join our monthly filmmaking club for ages 10+ at Newcastle Community Cinema and make a short movie that will be screened at this year's Full Moon Film Festival!
Starting Tuesday 20th October, 6.00pm–8.00pm, young filmmakers will work with WheelWorks artist and videographer Corey McKinney to learn how to use professional camera and audio recording equipment; how to work in teams as a film crew, and how to plan, act, shoot, and direct their own films.
Get hands on with lights, tripods, editing equipment, green screens, and more in fun sessions and meet other young filmmakers – whether making a thrilling spy flick, out of this world sci-fi movie, a thoughtful documentary, or any type of film that comes to mind!
Sessions will take place on the third Tuesday of every month on the following dates: Tuesday 20th October, Tuesday 17th November, Tuesday 15th December, Tuesday 19th January, Tuesday 16th February, and Tuesday 16th March.
Session 1: Introduction, Ideas & Equipment
Tuesday 20 October 2026 - 6-8pm
We’ll kick things off by getting to know the world of filmmaking and the equipment that brings a movie to life. Try out professional cameras, microphones, tripods and more, discover the different jobs involved in making a film, and learn how a film crew works together. Then it’s time to get creative – brainstorm ideas, explore different genres and start developing your own short film concept.
Session 2: Storyboarding & Planning
Tuesday 17th November
Every great film starts with a great idea – but turning that idea into a movie takes some planning! This session is all about developing your chosen story, creating characters and working out what happens from beginning to end. You’ll learn how filmmakers use storyboards and shot lists to plan scenes, decide what needs to be filmed and organise your crew. By the end, you’ll have a clear plan ready to take your film from the page to the screen.
Session 3: Filming Part 1
Tuesday 15th December
Time to get behind the camera! Put your planning into action as you begin filming your movie. Learn how to frame shots, move the camera, capture clear dialogue and record sound, while working together as a professional-style film crew. You’ll get hands-on experience taking on different roles, from camera operator and sound recordist to director and performer, and start building the footage that will become your finished film.
Session 4: Filming Part 2
Tuesday 19th January 2027
The cameras are rolling again! Continue shooting your film and work together to bring your story to life on screen. You’ll review the footage you’ve already captured, spot anything that might be missing and learn why filmmakers often need to shoot scenes more than once. There’ll be plenty of opportunity to experiment with different shots, angles and ideas before wrapping up your main filming and making sure you have everything you need for the edit.
Session 5: Filming Part 2
Tuesday 16th February 2027
Now the real movie magic begins! Take all those hours of footage and start turning them into a proper short film. You’ll be introduced to the editing process and learn how to select your best shots, put scenes together and create a story that flows. We’ll also explore pacing, sound, music, basic colour correction and other post-production tricks that can transform raw footage into something that feels like a finished movie.
Session 6: Final Filming / Pick-Ups & Finishing
Tuesday 16th March 2027
It’s time for the final push! We’ll watch back the film, identify any shots or scenes that still need work and head back behind the camera for any final pick-ups. Then it’s back to the edit suite to polish everything, make those last creative decisions and get the film ready for its big-screen debut. By the end of the session, your team will have a finished short film ready to be showcased at this year’s Full Moon Film Festival!
Christmas Wreaths with SV Blooms
This December, come learn a new skill with Susan from SV Blooms and create a stunning winter wreath to adorn your front door. Made sustainably on a moss base, this wreath will last all winter and even into the new year, when you can refresh it in time for spring.
Robin felting workshop with Artist Jennifer Cunningham
Come along and make your very own felted robin to decorate your tree. Dundrum artist Jennifer Cunningham will take you through the basic process of needle felting using wool fibres to create a small felted robin. All materials provided. This session is suitable for beginners and people of all ages over 7 yrs. Refreshments provided
2D Animation
In this workshop, children learn how to make a full 2D animated film with iPads with digital styluses.
The workshop also comprises advice on how to draw better characters and achieve convincing movements, taught by a professional animator.
Cartoon Character Development
Using our iPads and drawing materials, this workshop is ideal for those want to improve their drawing techniques, and learn about the basics of character creation for animation and comics.
Lego Animation (afternoon)
These mini animation master classes by Can Do Academy are a great introduction for children to the colourful world of Lego animation!
The workshop will allow participants to make a complete animated Lego film on an iPad, using sound effects, visual effects, titles and lots of imagination!
